The Wolves of Tomorrow

"Animals were ravaged by those same radioactive claws that rended the globe, viciously tearing and reworking the very fabric of their DNA, changing them and making them something more - sometimes stronger, and sometimes grotesque. Eras have passed for the fauna that remained, and what the fallout did not change, evolution stepped in to remedy."

In the world of Children of Moon, flora and fauna alike are far from what we are used to in our time. Looking back at the past and the amazing and sometimes terrifying twists and turns that the various evolutions of life on earth, it's easy to understand why the radioactive changes brought out the wild nature in creatures fighting for survival after what could have easily been the death of the entire planet after the fallout. Thankfully, however, life found a way. In regards to the animals that are currently around in this part of time, they are stronger and faster, much like our wolf-kin, though very few had the benefit of becoming more intelligent, with only bears and certain kinds of birds finding an intelligence even close to that.

It would do best to think of animals almost like the creatures from the prehistoric eras. Dangerous. Unpredictable. Big. For the more modern version of creatures, however, most things are far from what you'd see now. While definitely not the sort of creatures from ancient times exactly, it gives a good idea of the crazy creatures one may run into inside and outside of the Three River's Sound. As a rule of thumb (or perhaps duclaw), anything that could kill you by touching you is probably not found within the tripack territories, but could be found elsewhere.

"Wiser, faster, and with access to abilities beyond the scope of what mother nature could alone provide, she and this new beast of nuclear reformation have given birth to the wolf-kin. Dexterous, cunning and within human comparison of their capabilities."

Wolf-kindred are creatures that have evolved through various avenues from the original wolves of our time. These animals are moving along an evolutionary path that is very similar to that of man. However, at this point in time they are closer to the Gorilla or Chimpanzee in physical change, while their mental faculties are about on par with old world humans who have begun to understand themselves and their environment.

In regards to their current physical capabilities, these animals are very strong and very primal. They have the capability to walk upright, though not for long periods. It is useful for carrying heavy loads, reaching high objects, doing work which requires use of the poseable paws, and scaring away dangerous creatures by looking larger or throwing projectiles. Their forepaws have evolved to resemble human hands, though (unless they have some form of "gift", which are mutations from nuclear contamination in the genepool) they have claws, not nails, and their fingers are much like paws with pads. Not quite anthropomorphic, but definitely not your run-of-the-mill wolf of this day and age.

Primitive Evolution

When thinking on the concept of a wolf evolved, "Canis Lupus" is like what Lucy or Ardi are to Homo Sapiens. In the same vein, Canis Lupus can be thought of as a precursor of this new species. We could call it "Canis Pollex" - thumbed canine, "Canis Probus" - meaning anything from ethical, upright, or intelligent canine. Or even "Canis Sagax" - Sagacious Canine, in the same heir as humanity.

Envision a wolf, Canis Lupus, and then give it hands, and smarts, and you have Wolf-kindred. They don't posess humanoid features like long arms and kneed legs, pronouced shoulders, or even pecs. Humanity is not a part of these wolves. It's just convergent evolution. For all intents and purposes, these are wolves - just ones that you won't see for a long, long time.
